Sangria is a fruity, slightly sweet wine punch that the perfect accompaniment to spicyfood. I like to load mine up with fresh fruit — lemons, limes, oranges, apples, peaches, strawberries, grapes and whatever else is in season or a good deal at the grocery store.

Traditional sangria is made with dry red wine and sweetened with sugar. Some recipes also call forlemon-lime soda to give it some fizz and additional sweetness.

But you can also make it with club soda and a zero-calorie sweetener, likeSweet’N Low®, to reduce the calories. I used a Spanish Tempranillo Garnacha blend for this recipe, and I also added a touch of brandy (as is traditional) and some orange peach mango juice.

Since people often have different preferences for how sweet they like their co*cktails, I like to let everyone add their own packets of sweetener.

That way, everyone canenjoy just the right amount of sweetness for their taste, without the extra calories.

Ahh, so refreshing. A glass of this really hits the spot on a hot summer day.

For best results, refrigerate the sangria for several hours, or even overnight, before serving.

To serve, add peaches, strawberries and grapes to a wine glass and fill halfway with ice. Add Sweet’N Low® (if you didn’t add it to the pitcher), then fill your glass 3/4 full with sangria. Top with a splash of club soda, stir and garnish with lime or other citrus.

Here, my husband demonstrates how easy it is to make the perfect glass of sangria:
